Remembering Seamus Heaney

Remembering Seamus Heaney

This morning I was sad to learn of the death of Irish poet Seamus Heaney, whose work is simply stunning.

Below is a video from the BBC-Northern Ireland's Seamus Heaney: A Life in Pictures, which edited together footage of Heaney reading from his famous 1966 poem, Digging

One of my favorite Heaney poems is from the same collection.

         Lovers on Aran

The timeless waves, bright, sifting, broken glass,
Came dazzling around, into the rocks,
Came glinting, sifting from the Americas
To posess Aran. Or did Aran rush
to throw wide arms of rock around a tide
That yielded with an ebb, with a soft crash?
Did sea define the land or land the sea?
Each drew new meaning from the waves' collision.
Sea broke on land to full identity.
